Bruce John Russell (1946 - 2022)

Biography

Bruce Russell (b. London, UK 1946 - d. 2022) studied at Chelsea School of Art for his bachelor’s and master’s degrees (1964–9), gaining a fellowship in painting at Gloucestershire College of Art (1969–70). He was Young Contemporaries prizewinner in 1968 and gained an Art Council Award in 1975 and its Major Award in 1978. Russell began teaching at York School of Art, between 1971–4 and later  at Newcastle Polytechnic and St Martin’s School of Art. From 1993 Russell was professor of fine art at Kingston University where he was closely involved in promoting exhibitions. From 1997 he was the director of Kingston’s Stanley Picker Gallery. He particiated numerous group exhibitions and showed solo steadily from his exhibition in 1973, at the White Rose Gallery, Bradford.

Later solo shows included the Venice Biennale, Aperto, and Demarco Gallery, Edinburgh International Festival (both 1995), and Beardsmore Gallery (2002). In that show, Congeries, Russell showed multi-panelled abstract works, sometimes with crossing images. The Arts Council, British Council, Contemporary Art Society, European Parliament and many other public collections acquired Russell’s work.
