Diana Hobson (1943)

Biography

Diana Hobson (b. Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire, UK 1943) studied ceramics at Stoke on Trent College of Art (1961) and North Staffs College of Technology, Stafforshire University (1962) having apprenticed with Clarice Cliff. She became a designer for Howard Pottery Ltd (1964-70) until she moved to London and began to work with metal, becoming an enamellist to the jeweller Wendy Ramshaw (1939-2018). Hobson then studied at the Royal College of Art, London (1973-6) and participated in numerous exhibitions of silver and jewellery worldwide, including the Victoria and Albert museum and Goldsmiths Hall, London; Artisaani, Helsinki, Finland; Schmuck Museum, Pfortzheim, W. Germany; Osterreichisches Museum fur Angewandte Kunst und Gallerie am Graben, Vienna; Brisbane Civic Art Gallery and Museum, Australia. She had a British Council scholarship attached to Atenaum School of Art and Design, Helsinki, Finland (1976-7). Between 1979 and 1987 she lectured in metalwork at Camberwell School of Art whilst honing the technique of pâte de verre glass in her own studio practice which she showcased in exhibitions such as Coleridge, London (1983) and the Victoria & Albert Museum (1986),  amongst others.

More recently, Hobson branched out into producing video installations and held a residency at the Baer Arts Center, Hofsos, Iceland which culminated in the project Fragile Memories (2014).
