Frederick 'Fred' Joseph William Bushe RSA OBE (1931 - 2009)

Biography

Fred Jospeh William Bushe RSA OBE (b. Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, Scotland, UK 1931 - d. Alford, Aberdeenshire 2009) studied, under Benno Schotz, at the Glasgow School of Art, 1949–53, and University of Birmingham’s School of Art Education, 1966–7. He lectured in sculpture at Liverpool College of Education, 1962–9, and Aberdeen College of Education, 1969–79, when he became a full-time sculptor. He established the Scottish Sculpture Workshop in Lumsden, Aberdeenshire in  1979, starting with wood and metal carving facilities and later adding a metal foundry.In 19891 he also established the Scottish Sculpture Open, a biennal exhibition, held at the historic Kildrummy Castle near Alford. He took part in group shows in Britain and abroad and had solo exhibitions: at 57 Gallery, Edinburgh, in 1962; Bluecoat Gallery, Liverpool, 1966; and the Talbot Rice Art Centre, Edinburgh, 1982. He was elected RSA in 1986 and awarded an OBE in 1995. 

Among Buishe's best-known works is Grave Gate, in steel and wood, on display in the Sculpture Courtyard of the University of Glasgow's Hunterian Museum. Another is Abstract Frieze, which adorns the entrance to the Science Lecture Rooms in the northern extension to Liverpool University. His wooden creation T-Fold is a proud possession of the Inverness-based Highland Council. Four Interlocking Moveable Forms (1974) was donated to the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, Coventry by the Contemporary Art Society in 1986.
