Biography
Santiago Yahuarcani (b. Pucaurquillo, Peru 1961) is a self-taught painter and sculptor, and leader of the Uitoto and Bora peoples of the Ampiyacú River. His life has been dedicated to developing art and storytelling as a form of expression. He uses his art to tell us about and bring us closer to the rich and complex spiritual world of the Uitotos. His family are survivors of the rubber genocide. His works are part of the collections of the Museo de Arte de Lima (MALI), Lima; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (MNCARS), Madrid; and the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven. Solo exhibitions include Centro Cultural Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, Lima (2023); ICPNA Cultura, Lima (2021 and 2019); and Centro Cultural El Olivar, Lima (2018). Group exhibitions include Toronto Biennial of Art (2024); 14th Gwangju Biennale (2023); Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, Lima (2022); Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna (2021); Crisis Galeria, Lima (2020); and Matadero, Madrid (2019).
