Bernard Arthur Ruston 'B. A. R.' (Sam) Carter (1909 - 2006)

Biography

Bernard Arthur Ruston 'B. A. R.' Sam Carter (b. Kenilworth, Warwickshire, UK 1909 - d. Mousehole, Cornwall, UK 2006) attended Grenoble and Innsbruck Universities before studying modern languages at Cambridge (1930–2) and attended the Central School of Arts and Crafts, where his teachers included John Cooper, John Farleigh, Fred Porter and Bernard Meninsky, as well attending the Euston Road School from 1937.

He taught at Camberwell School of Art, 1945–9, and of the Slade School of Fine Art, 1949–78, becoming professor of perspective at Royal Academy Schools, 1975–83. Carter contributed to a number of learned journals on perspective, as well as Oxford Companion to Art, 1970. He showed with the East London Group, London Group and the Arts Council Euston Road touring exhibition, 1948–9, and the RA Summer Exhibitions. He was married to the artist Jane Tresidder.
