Kenneth Wood (1912 - 2008)

Biography

Kenneth Wood (b. Sheffield, Yorkshire, UK 1912 - d. 2008) studied painting at Sheffield College of Arts & Crafts (1930-33) after which he intially painted the frontipeices for Jan Bussell's Marionette Theatre and subsequently joined The London Marionette Theatre. Wood also made his own marionettes and later established his own theatre. He had moved to London with fellow Yorkshire-man artist Rowland Suddaby (1912-1972) and they both exhibited pictures together with the Wertheim Gallery (1936-39). After WW2 he regularly exhibited at the Redfern Gallery and in 1949 had a solo exhibition with the Leger Gallery. His work was praised by art crtics of the time but by 1959 he was working as an art director at various advertising agencies as well as teaching art history at the WEA (Worker’s Educational Association) and the Extra Mural Department of London University. In 1972 he set up his own small Design Studio, in conjunction with his friend Ken Dartford.
