Biography

The Kasmin Gallery (1963 -72) at 118 New Bond Street, London, founded by John Kasmin with support from Sheridan Dufferin, 5th Marquess of Dufferin and Ava (1938-1988), was both influential in bringing to London work by American abstract artists such as Morris Louis, Kenneth Noland, Jules Olitski, Helen Frankenthaler and Frank Stella and instrumental in shaping the early careers of British artists such as Anthony Caro, Richard Smith and David Hockney by placing them under contract and promoting their work abroad. John Kasmin had briefly worked with Victor Musgrave at Gallery One and his accommodating wife, the photographer Ida Kar between 1956 and 1958.
