David Lloyd-Jones (1928 - 1984)

Biography

David Lloyd-Jones (b. Wimbledon, London, UK 1928 - d. York 1984) was a cinema owner for 11 years, following his father-in-law Xavier Prendergast's business In the 1950s he attended Guildford Art School with Helen Pincombe, a highly respected potter and teacher who had studied under William Staite Murray, but otherwise he was largely self-taught. In 1962, supported by his wife, June, he set up his own studio in the grounds of Fulford House in York with a Bernard Leach kick-wheel he had purchased three years earlier. He exhibited with three painters - John Langton, Russel Platt and Reg Williams - as the York Four. Lloyd-Jones became a member of the Craftsmen Potters Association in the 1970s and was elected as a council member in the 1980s and served as Chairman for three years. He was awarded an honorary doctorate by York University in 1989.
