Michiko Kawarabayashi (1942)

Biography

Michiko Kawarabayashi (b. Kyoto, Japan 1942) studied at the International Design Institute in Kyoto under Isaburo Ueno and Rizzi Rix (1962-64). She is a textile artist who combines traditional Japanese materials – mizuhiki, kaya – with more contemporary materials to create her architectonic, transparent, sculptural works, which are formed by her personal techniques. Kawarabayashi has exhibited in Japan and internationally since 1995, including Trough the Surface Japanese and British artist on tour throughout the UK (2004). Germination (2003) was acquired by the Contemporary Art Society and donated to Nottingham Castle Museum and Art Gallery (on loan to Newstead Abbey, 2015 and 2022) in 2005. Kawarabayashi is Professor at Seian University of Art and Design, Otsu, Shiga, Japan.
