Gordon House (1932 - 2004)

Biography

Gordon House (b. Pontardawe, Wales, UK 1932 - d. 2004) spent his childhood in a valley near Swansea, which he painted in his later years and wrote about in his memoir, Tin-pan Valley (2004). His family moved to Letchworth when he was a teenager and House studied at the Luton School of Art and St Albans School of Art, whilst working in a hospital inbetween, before becoming an assistant to the ecclesiastical sculptor of Austrian origin, Theodor Kern (1900-1969). House started his career as a graphic designer when he joined a small advertising studio in Letchworth and between 1952 and 1959; he designed for ICI and, from 1959 and 1961, for the Kynoch Press and did the graphics on the Beatles' album covers and later for Wings' first album. House also exhibited as a abstract painter at the Situation exhibition at the Institite of Contemporay Art (ICA) in 1961 and continued to paint throughout his life.
