On 7 March, AB Fine Art Foundry in East London opened its doors to CAS Patrons for a unique opportunity to experience the production of artist Gillian Wearing’s historic commission for Parliament Square.
In 2017 *Consultancy were appointed by the Mayor of London to manage the artwork commission, and have been working closely with the artist to deliver a monument to honour the suffrage movement. Wearing's bronze statue of Dame Millicent Fawcett will commemorate the centenary of the Representation of the People Act 1918, and when unveiled will be the first sculpture of a woman in Parliament Square.
Gillian Wearing and *Consultancy’s Jordan Kaplan gave the patrons an insight into bringing a major commission to fruition, followed by a guided tour of the foundry. Wearing has drawn together dressmakers, 3D modellers, activists, historians, fabricators and the foundry to create a work that marries up ancient and state of the art techniques to produce a work that will stand for hundreds of years.
