Lynette Yiadom-Boakye creates an exclusive etching for the Contemporary Art Society

We are pleased to host The Artist’s Table with Lynette Yiadom-Boakye on 12 March 2018. Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, whose brooding portraits of black figures have been exhibited in major solo exhibitions at the Serpentine Gallery (2015) and the New Museum in New York (2017), will premiere a new performance and readings at this fundraiser for our charitable mission. She has also generously produced a special limited edition of 30 exclusively for guests at the event for the Contemporary Art Society, in collaboration with Corvi-Mora. The Contemporary Art Society first acquired Lynette Yiadom-Boakye’s work in 2013, buying To Tell Them Where It’s Got To (2013) for Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery, ahead of her exhibition at the Venice Biennale in the same year. The Contemporary Art Society has also acquired ten etchings for The Stanley and Audrey Burton Gallery in Leeds, which were first shown at her acclaimed exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery in 2015.

Yiadom-Boakye’s paintings are predominantly figurative with raw and muted colours. With her expressive representations of the human figure, the artist examines the formal mechanisms of the medium of painting and reveals political and psychological dimensions in her works, which focus on fictional characters who exist beyond our world in a different time and in an unknown location. She paints figures that are intentionally removed from time and place.

Her work is included in the permanent collections of a number of institutions, including the Tate Collection, London, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Miami Art Museum, the Studio Museum in Harlem, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, Nasher Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the National Museum of African Art, Museum of Modern Art Warsaw.  She was nominated for the Turner Prize in 2013.
