The Details
In 2017, Lendlease appointed *Consultancy to deliver a comprehensive art strategy for Elephant Park, their £2 billion development across 25 acres of Elephant & Castle, London. The strategy advocates employing culture to enhance green infrastructure, encourage connectivity with the surrounding areas and define a distinctive sense of place.
The Public Art Strategy for Elephant Park offers opportunities for art and culture to breathe new life into this unique part of Central London. Through ambitious commissioning supported by cultural animation, the Strategy seeks to connect up and navigate the development, drawing footfall through a new linear park and into the green heart of Elephant & Castle. The vision is to commission artwork that welcomes you home if you are resident and extends that welcoming embrace to new visitors who are entering Elephant Park for the first time. The ambition is that all visitors will want to return and that the artwork will contribute to a sense of place on each visit. The Strategy sets out an art programme that responds to the context of Elephant Park, developing a distinctive identity and setting a standard for public art that has the potential to be a benchmark locally, nationally and internationally, recognising that Elephant Park is a local neighbourhood within a global city and that everyone will experience the area differently.
The commissioned artworks will reflect narratives of this place to encourage new and meaningful relationships with the area, with the art programme offering an opportunity to mark a moment in time and create a new legacy for Elephant & Castle. Community engagement is built into the commissioning processes through a creative approach that will build understanding and support for the development and generate a widespread sense of ownership and connection.
