Ceramics Day (7 November 2024)
Thursday 7 November, 11 am – 5 pm
This day will be dedicated to the work of artists who explore the artistic and discursive possibilities of ceramics within their practice.
We will begin in Tottenham, North London, at Nao Matsunaga’s studio, who will show some of his work in progress for upcoming exhibitions and findings and new work produced from his previous residency in Mexico. He will share his ideas about the sacredness of materials and the ceremonial aspect of objects and spaces. We will then travel to London's East End, to visit Troy Town Art Pottery, ‘a radical and psychedelic ceramic workshop’, where we will meet founder Aaron Angell. He will introduce the project, guide the group through the premises and talk about his research on the materiality and history of ceramics.
After lunch, we will walk to Anouhsa Payne’s studio, who will show some of her fascinating and magical multimedia artworks, weaving storytelling, fantasy and fortuitous encounters with ceramics, textiles and other mixed materials. We will end the day at Bisila Noha’s studio, whose playful, unusual yet political ceramics acknowledge the ancestral experience and its resonance in contemporary culture while honouring the contributions of women of colour to the history of art and craft and their presence in our lived present.
This event is targeted to both Craft and Fine Art Curators from the CAS network. We are offering travel bursaries to cover transport. Lunch will also be provided by the CAS.
To apply for a bursary or register for attendance, please fill in the travel bursary by reserving a spot here. Deadline to apply Monday 21 October before 10 am.
