William Townsend (1909 - 1973)

Biography

William Townsend (b. London, UK 1909 - d. 1973) studied at the Slade School of Fine Art (1926–30). He travelled in France, Italy and the Near East (1929-30). His first sosl exhibition was at the Bloomsbury Gallery in 1932 and he exhibited with the London Group from 1931 (ad became a member in 1951) and he was ssociated with the Euston Road School (1937-9). He served with the Royal Artillery and the Army Educational Corps (1941-6) and after the War, he conducted the Arts Wing of the Army School of Education, Preston (1945-6). Townsend taught at Camberwell School of Art (1946-9), and in 1951 he visited Canada to teach at the University of Alberta's Summer School of Fine Arts, Banff.  He had taught at the Slade School from 1949 and became a Reader in Fine Art in the University of London from 1961.
