Thomas William 'Bill' Ward (1918 - 2000)

Biography

Bill Ward (b. Sheffield, Yorkshire UK 1918 - d.  Holbrook, Suffolk, UK 2000), married to the sculptor Joan Ward, studied part-time with Eric Jones in Sheffield, 1937–9, then after WW2 military service he was at Royal College of Art (1946–50), where his teachers included Malcolm Osborne and Robert Sargent Austin and where he won a Silver Medal in 1949.  Ward taught at Harrow College of Higher Education (1950–80), finally as principal lecturer and director of illustration. He was made a member of RE in 1953 and RWS in 1957. He illustrated a number of nautical books, notably the Merchant Sailing Ships series by D. R.MacGregor, and produced Perspective and Composition, 1988. Ward was included in A Survey of Influential East Anglian Artists, Chappel Galleries in 1991, where he also had a solo show in 1995, which reviewed five decades of Ward’s output, and a memorial exhibition after his death in 2003.
