Sydney Earnshaw Greenwood (1887 - 1949)

Biography

Sydney Earnshaw Greenwood (b. Cornholme, Lancashire, UK 1887 – 1949) began his studies in Liverpool and he later he studied at the Académie Julian, Paris and at the Slade School of Fine Art, London. Greenwood worked as a commercial artist in Liverpool, Southport, and Chelsea. He was also known as a portrait painter, and his hangs in the National Portrait Gallery, London. Greenwood was the father of the actress, Joan Greenwood, who gave an unforgettable performance as the Honorable Gwendolyn Fairfax in the film version of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest.
