Stig Borglind (1892 - 1965)

Biography

Stig Borglind (b. Sweden 1882 - d. 1965), the oldest of the Falun printmakers, did not attend Academy in Stockholm until 1918-19. He was strongly influenced by Old Masters, especially Dutch artists such as Jan van de Velde (1593-1641) and studied the collection in Nationalmuseum, Stockholm and illustrations in The Studio. He did his first drypoint in 1918, began with the contours and then filled in - often used a combination of etching, drypoint and engraving, renound for the beautiful silvery tone and meticulous skill of his prints; won the prize for best foreign printmaker at the Venice Biennale 1942; took part in almost all of the main print exhibitins between 1942-65; memorial exhibition at Dalarna Musuem, Falun which transferred to the Nationalmuseum, Stockholm in 1966
