Sanaa Gateja (1950)

Biography

Sanaa Gateja (b. Kisoro, Uganda 1950) studied interior design at the International University of Art and Design, Florence in Italy and at Rhodec International College of Interior Design, Brighton and jewellery design at City of London College of Art and Design as well as working in Tomazo Hashimoto Jewellery Studio in Florence and attending the National Institute of Gemmology in Madagascar. He is based in Kampala, Uganda. His works in a variety of media such as bark cloth, waste paper, raffia, beads, wood and banana fibre are a combination of installation, tapestry, and sculpture. Gateja has exhibited extensively across Africa and internationally, including at Karma Gallery, New York; ARCOlisboa; INVESTEC, Cape Town Art Fair; FNB Johannesburg Art Fair (2016, 2017 & 2018); Art Paris; AKAA Art Fair, Paris (2016, 2017 & 2018); Themes & Variations, London; the Museum of Art and Design New York; and at the 58th Carnegie International.
