Major R. H. Raymond Smythies (1860 - 1939)

Biography

Major R. H. Raymond Smythies (1860-1939) was a commissioned officer in the Prince of Wales's Volunteers who retired from the Army in 1903. Henri Gaudier-Brzeska sculpted his portrait bust in 1912 - a plaster version of which is at Tate - gifted to the Contemporary Art Society in 1930 by whom presented to the Tate Gallery in 1969 (T01160).
