Biography
Poul Rytter (1895-1965), painter, muralist, printmaker, and sculptor, was born in Copenhagen on September 20, 1895. He was a painter's apprentice in a technical school before entering the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Art where he studied between 1913 and 1919. He was drawn toward working in wood and produced woodcuts and sculpture out of wood but he also became well known for his painted portraits.
In the mid to late 1950s, Rytter painted about thirty murals in buildings designed by the architect Preben Hempel in the Jutland area. Rytter designed his home and studio in Husby, which was called Ryttergaarden (Rytter Farmhouse) but it was destroyed by fire in 1976 and much of his work was lost.
Rytter's work was included in numerous exhibitions and is in the collections of the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Metropolitan Museum in New York, and the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco.
Poul Rytter died in Husby, Denmark on January 10, 1965.
