Phelan Gibb (1870 - 1948)

Biography

Phelan Gibb (b. Alnwick, Northumberland 1870  - d. Great Hampden, Buckinghamshire 1948) studied at Newcastle, Edinburgh, Paris (under J.-P. Laurens), Antwerp and, Munich.  He was influenced by the Cézanne exhibition at the  Salon d'Automne 1906.  He lived in Paris for twenty-five years and was highly thought of by Gertrude Stein. He exhibited at the Salon d'Automne (Sociétaire 1909), the Allied Artists' Association, London, and the Katz Gallery, New York. HIs first one-man exhibition in London was held at the Baillie Gallery 1911, and in Paris at Bernheim-Jeune 1913.
