Biography
Dr Percy Withers (b. Sale, Cheshire, UK 1867-d. Epwell, Oxfordshire 1945) was a GP who trained at Owen’s College, Manchester, then King’s College, Durham and worked in Altrincham, Lancashire, the Lake District and Worcestershire before retiring to Souldern Court and then Epwell Mill in Oxfordshire. He was also a writer of verse and tarvel guides and avid collector of literature
He bequeathed £100 to the Contemporary Art Society who purchased Fishing Boats (1945) by Tristram Hillier (1905- 1983) and presented it to Cartwright Hall Art Gallery, Bradford Museums & Galleries in 1950. He had previously, in 1930, co-purchased, with the CAS, a Crucifixion (1928) by Tom Saunders Nash (1891-1968) which was presented to Laing Art Galery, Newcastle in 1933.
