Biography
Martin Bloch (b. 1883 Nysa, Poland - d. London, UK 1954) was was a German-Jewish Expressionist artist who came to Britain from Germany, via Denmark, as a refugee in 1934. He studied music and architecture and then art in Munich and Berlin, notably with Lovis Corinth. His first solo show was held at Paul Cassirer Gallery, Berlin in 1911, followed by a retrospective at the Cassirer Gallery in 1920. Before WW2, he taught at an art school in London with Roy de Maistre and became a British citizen in 1947, living in London, Dorset and Wales as well as travelling to Canada and America where for a time he taught in Minneapolis. He exhibited at the Ben Uri Gallery, Leicester Galleries and the RA. Memorial exhibitions were held at Beaux Arts Gallery (1955); Arts Council, London, and touring (1957); Kaplan Gallery (1959), and the Ben Uri Gallery (1963).
