Maria van Kesteren (1933 - 2020)

Biography

Maria van Kesteren (b. Leiden, The Netherlands - d. 2020), a leading female woodturner, notably in elm, was based in Hilversum. She started as a an apprentice of the renowned Henk Van Trierum in Utrecht between 1958-9 before setting up her own studio in 1960. Between 1966-7 she worked at Kilkenny Design Workshops, Ireland. Her work is held in many international collections, including the V&A museum and Shipley Art Gallery, Gateshead in the UK. She was a Director of exhibition policy at Galerie Kapelhuis, Amersfoort between 1968-1992.  A major retrospective exhibition of her work was held at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam in 1995.
