Maria Antonietta Gambaro (1929 - 1981)

Biography

Maria Antonietta Gambaro (b. Genoa, Italy 1929 - d. Milan 1981) was a painter, graphic designer and scenographer. She won the Suzzara Prize in 1952. She had solo exhibitions including those in Galleria Bergamini, Milan (1953); San Matteo Gallery, Genoa (1958); L'Obelisco Gallery, Rome (1959); Galleria del Mulino, Rome (1963); Kunstlergilde, Ulm (1963) and Galleria Il Vicolo, Genoa (1977) when the subject matter of her sombre paintings was fishermen and workers as well as portrait commissions. She had a retrospective at the Teatro del Falcone, Genoa in 1983. She was also a successful set and costume designer, particularly for operas at the Teatro della Scala in Milan.
