Lisa Ingeborg van der Bergh Sainsbury (1912 - 2014)

Biography

Lisa Ingeborg van der Bergh (1912-2014) was the daughter of Simon Van den Bergh, a professor of philosophy at the University of Paris. Other members of her family ran a major margarine company.  In 1937 she married Robert James Sainsbury, later Sir Robert Sainsbury (1906-2000). The couple became well known as art collectors and patrons of the arts. In 1973 they donated their large art collection (of more than 400 works) to the University of East Anglia, in Norwich where they commissioned the architect Norman Foster to design an art gallery. In 1979 the Sainsbury Centre for the Visual Arts was opened.
