Judith Cowan (1954)

Biography

Judith Cowan (b. London 1954) studied at Bristol College of Art (1973–4), then at Sheffield College of Art (1974–7), and Chelsea School of Art (1977–8). She has received awards and prizes from the Elephant Trust / Henry Moore Foundation, Camden Art Centre, UK (1993); Rassegna Internationale di Scultura Contemporanea, San Marino, prize-winner, Italy (1979); and Gulbenkian Rome Scholarship, British School at Rome, Italy (1978-9); and has exhibited internationally in the Czech Republic, Italy, Norway, Sharjah, and USA. She is a contemporary of the New British Sculpture, which emerged in the early 1980s. Her exhibitions include Northern Young Contemporaries, at Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester, from 1975, being a prizewinner in 1977; and Woodlands Art Gallery touring show, 1981–2, of Greater London Arts Association award winners and at Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge, 1996.
