Joseph Syddall (1864 - 1942)

Biography

Joseph Syddall (b. Old Whittington, Chesterfield, UK 1864 - d. 1942) studied at the Herkomer Institute, Bushey, Hertfordshire and worked alongside his mentor, Sir Herbert von Herkomer (1849-1914), to illustrate Thomas Hardy's 'Tess of the D’Urbervilles' for The Graphic magazine. Although Syddall is most well-known for his pencil drawings, he also showed great skill when working in oil.
