John Warren-Davis (1919 - 1998)

Biography

Sculptor and teacher in wood, bronze, stone and aluminium (in some sources wrongly listed under Davis, in others as Warren-Davis), born in Christchurch, Hampshire. He studied at Westminster School of Art, 1938–9, with Mark Gertler and Bernard Meninsky, then 1949–52 at Brighton College of Art with James Woodford. From 1959–75 he lectured in sculpture at Central School of Art and Design and was a visiting lecturer at Leeds, Portsmouth and Canterbury Polytechnics. Showed with Lords, Molton, Grosvenor and Redfern Galleries and RA Summer Exhibition. Warren Davis “started modelling the figure, moved on to carving under the influence of Brancusi, then to large timber constructions. Later moved back to carving.” Arts Council, Contemporary Art Society, National Museum of Wales in Cardiff, Southampton and Leeds and American galleries hold his work.

Lived in St Ishmaels, Haverfordwest, Dyfed. Warren Davis’ funeral was at Chichester Crematorium, Sussex.
