John J. A. Murphy (1888 - 1967)

Biography

Printmaker and painter, wood engraver and book-maker; studied at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the Art Students League; worked as a portrait painter; moved to London to be painter Frank Brangwyn's assistant; served in the camouflage section of the Army Corps of Engineers in France and illustrated posters during WWI; returned to New York 1921 and had a solo exhibition of woodcuts at Keppel's Gallery; exhibited at the Leicester Gallery, London and Walker Galleries, New York; designed book illustrations and typography; fellow of the Metropolitan Museum.
