Biography
Jill Salaman (b. London, UK 1906 - 1989), later Mrs Eric C. Hamer, was a member of the Salaman family of artists. She was a potter who lived in Selsey, Sussex (1929-1950). She trained at the Central School of Arts & Craft, with Bernard Leach in St Ives and also under William Staite Murray at the Royal College of Art, London. She was also friends with the leading female potter, Katherine Pleydell Bouverie. Salaman's first professional commission was to design tiles for the ward room of HMS York during wartime. She had a solo exhibition at the Guggenheim-Jeune Gallery, December 1938 and also exhibited at Warren Gallery (1933); Zwemmer Gallery (1935); Brook Street Gallery (1936); Heal's International Craftmanship Today. Pieces are in the collections of Manchester Art Gallery, UK and Freer Gallery, Washington, USA.
