James Pyman (1962)

Biography

James Pyman (b. Eastbourne, East Sussex 1962) studied fine art at Sheffield City Polytechnic where he made cross-disciplinary work in video, film, photography, sound and performance art. His practice comprises pencil and ink drawings for gallery exhibitions as well as book and magazine illustration, cartoons and comic books. His first publication, Rememberdogs was commissioned by Imprint 93. He went on to produce Nine Panel Grid, a series of artists' comics. He has shown in numerous mixed exhibitions including EASTinternational 2003. Recent artworks have included a large-scale external installation at The Hepworth Wakefield (2012-16), a solo exhibition of drawings at Maureen Paley Gallery, London (2010) and illustrated publications Dracula (2008) and his comic Wilf - A Life in Pictures (2005) is a fictional biography of an English editorial cartoonist. In 2007 he held the Rome Scholarship at the British School at Rome to visually research ‘Pinocchio’. Pyman is completing a PhD researching British newspaper comic strips. Pyman illustrated Mark Kamine’s The River in the Living Room and an earlier version of The Adventures of Lionel: The Book of Hours was published in 2007 in an edition of 150 by Piece of Paper Press, the imprint of British author Tony White. He has lectured at Chelsea School of Art, University of Huddersfield, and Sheffield Hallam University.
