Biography
James Fitton RA (b. Oldham, Lancashire, UK 1899 - d. 1982) was genre painter, lithographer and and theatrical designer. He initially apprenticed to a fabric designer at the age of fourteen andlater worked on a newspaper. He attended evening classes at Manchester School of Art while working in the docks at night where he met L. S. Lowry. Fitton came to London in 1919 and attended evening classes at the Central School of Art under A. S. Hartrick (1864-1950). He married the painter Margaret Cook in 1928. He exhibited at the Royal Academy (1929); New English Art Club and The London Group (both in 1930), the latter of which he became a member in 1934. He had a solo exhibition at Arthur Tooth & Sons in 1933. He wrote The First Six Months are the Worst (1939). He was elected ARA in 1944 and RA in 1954.
