

Helen Pavel (b. Prague, Czechoslovakia 1964) came to Scotland in 1968 and later studied at Kingston Polytechnic (1982–6) and Royal College of Art (1987–9). She is an abstract artist whose work is reminiscent of places and the natural world, using subtle, poetic colours. Gained several awards, including the Picker Travel Scholarship and in 1989 first prize in the Barclays Young Painters’ Award. Pavel exhibited widely in group shows such as New Contemporaries, Into the Nineties at Mall Galleries, with the London Group and in (dis)parities at Mappin Art Gallery, Sheffield (1992), and in 1993 at Herbert Art Gallery, Coventry (1993). She now lives in Munich, Germany.
