(George) Loraine Conran (1912 - 1986)

Biography

G. Loraine Conran (1912-1986), the first curator of Southampton City Art Gallery, from around 1938, curator of the Iveagh Bequest, Kenwood, from 1950 and Director of Manchester City Art Gallery (1962–1976) was also a Contemporary Art Society Committee Member (1951-70) and its Honorary Secretary. He was also the CAS elected buyer for 1956 and 1966, purchasing 40 works by Peter Coker, Alan Davie, Merlyn Evans, Frederick Gore, Anthony Gross, William Halle, Peter Kinley, Denis Wirth-Miller, Russell Platt, Adrian Ryan, Jack Smith, Keith Vaughan, Michael Wishart and Norman Adams, Frank Auerbach, Anthony Benjamin. Denis Bowen, Geoffrey Clarke, Robyn Denny, Peter Joseph, Henry Mundy, William Tucker and Michael Tyzack.
