George J. Charlton (1899 - 1979)

Biography

George J. Charlton (b. London 1899 - d. 1979) studied at the Slade School of Fine Art from 1914, joining the staff in 1919. He also taught at Willesden School of Art (1949-59), and was an examiner in art for the University of London school examinations for many years. He exhibited in London, having his first solo show at the Redfern Gallery in 1924, from which the Tate Gallery purchased his pastel Elephants (1924). There was a posthumous show at the Chambers Gallery in 2005 in which works by his wife Daphne, née Gribble (1909-1991), whom he had married in 1929, a former Slade School of Fine Art student and in 1940 a model (Tate; N05148) for Stanley Spencer, were also shown.
