Frank Lewis Emanuel (1865 - 1948)

Biography

Frank L. Emanuel (b. Bayswater, London, UK 1865 - d. 1948) was a painter of landscapes and interiors, draughtsman, etcher, teacher and writer who studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, under Legros and Académie Julian, Paris, under Bouguereau. He exhibited from 1896 at the Royal Academy, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Manchester Academy of Fine Art, New English Art Club, the Paris Salon and elsewhere. Emanuel worked for The Manchester Guardian, The Studio and wrote for the Architectural Reviewand was the author of Etching and Etchings: a guide to the technique and to print collection, Pitman (1930). He taught etching at the Central School of Arts and Crafts (1918-1930); President of the Society of Graphic Art, examiner for the Royal Drawing Society; member of the Art Workers' Guild and the Society of Marine Artists. His work is held by the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, Hastings Museum and Art Gallery, and in London by the Imperial War Museum, Guildhall Library and V&A Museum.
