Biography

Essil R. Forrest Elmslie, Mrs Rutherston (b. Bedford, UK 1880 - d. 1952) was a portrait painter who succeeded Vanessa Bell as Secretary of The Friday Club, which Bell had funded in 1905 (1913-). It has been said that she co-founded The Redfern Gallery with a friend. She trained at the Slade School of Fine Art around 1904. With her husband, Charles Rutherston (1866-1927), brother of Albert Rutherston (1881-1953) and William Rothenstein (1872-1945), whom she married as his second wife in 1925, donated their collection to Manchester Art Gallery in 1926. She herself exhibited the New English Art Club (NEAC), the London Salon of the Allied Artsts' Association, Goupil Gallery and Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.
