Emma Stibbon RA (1962)

Biography

Emma Stibbon RA (b. Munster, Germany 1962) studied at Portsmouth College of Art (1980-1), Goldsmiths College, London (1981-4), Camberwell School of Art (1984-6), and the University of the West of England (2002-05) She is primarily a printmakler and is currently Senior Lecturer in Fine Art Printmaking at the University of Brighton. She has held several residencies, including the Derek Hill Scholarship at the British School in Rome (2010) and also participated in The Arctic Circle (2013) an art and science Svalbard expedition to the Arctic Circle. Awards included Sun Life Award, Open Print Exhibition, RWA (1994); at National Print Exhibition, Mall Galleries, T N Lawrence Materials Prize and Galleries Magazine Publicity Award, Rothenstein Trophy (1995); and Open Print Exhibition Award, RWA (1997). Group exhibitions have included at Gimpel Fils (1991); the RA Summer Exhibition (from 1994); Summer Show, Redfern Gallery (1996); and Land Marks, Jill George Gallery (1999), who in 2002 gave her a solo show of drawings and woodcuts, including the large and broodingly atmospheric image Great Wall. Solo exhbitions have been held at Retreat ROOM, London (2008 & 2011); StadtLandschaften Stadtmuseum, Berlin (2009);  and Kunstverien Kunsthaus-Potsdam (2012).

Stibbon was elected a member of the RE in 1996, RWA in 1997 and was elecetd RA in 2013. She has works in public and private collections, including the The Ashmolean Museum, Oxford; Russell-Cotes Art Gallery, Bournemouth; Bristol City Art Gallery; Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Scott Polar Research Institute, University of Cambridge; the Stadtmuseum, Berlin; and Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle upon Tyne.
