Dorothy Hutton (1889 - 1984)

Biography

Dorothy Hutton (b. Bolton, Lancashire, UK 1889 - d. 1984) studied at the Central School of Arts and Crafts under F. Ernest Jackson (1872-1945) in the 1920s. She opened the Three Shields Gallery in Holland Street, London, exhibiting prints, drawings and watercolours. She also exhibited widely in the 1930 and 40s and at the Royal Academy. Well known for her depiction of flowers she was commissioned by London Transport, 1922-54, for a series of seasonal posters advertising flowers in bloom in the city. She was the official artist to the Crown Office and among other works, responsible for a memorial to General Dwight Eisenhower. From 1964 she was a member of the Art Workers' Guild. Her poster designs are held by the London Transport Museum.
