Denis Mathews (1913 - 1997)

Biography

Denis Mathews (b. London 1913 - d. 1997) was a landscape painter, draughtsman and critic. He was the son of the Canadian artist Richard George Mathews (1870-1955) and studied at the Slade School of Fine Art (1930-3 & 1935-6). His first solo show was at the Leicester Galleries, London (1947) and he also exhibited at The Redfern Gallery and Agnew's. He travelled widely, including visits to France, China and Morocco. He was first Assistant and then Secretary of the Contemporary Art Society (1947-56). Has travelled widely, including visits to France, China and Morocco.
