Biography
Clifford Frith (b. London, UK 1924), grandson of the renowned historical genre painter, and painter of Victorian life, William Powell Frith RA (1819-1909), began his artistic training at the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts before attending St Martin’s School of Art under the instruction of Roland Vivian Pitchforth (1894- 1982) and Victor Pasmore (1908-1998). Following his graduation Frith taught at Camberwell and Goldsmith’s College of Art. He later spent time visiting Nigeria with fellow artist Isabel Rawsthorne (1912-1992). Together they worked at the Zaria Art School (part of the Nigerian College of Arts, Science and Technology), where he secured the position Head of the Department of Fine Art. Both artists produced studies of native people and of the Nigerian landscape. Frith exhibited at the Royal Academy, The Redfern Gallery and Wildenstein's in London and then in 1977 he emigrated to Australia where he has participated in group exhibitions as well as having solo shows. Examples of his work are held in British and Australian institutions including the Art Gallery of South Australia, the National Gallery of Australia, Adelaide Festival Centre; Parliament House, Canberra, Adelaide University, and Flinders University of South Australia.
