Biography
Anthony Benjamin (b. Boarhunt, Hampshire, UK 1931 - d. Kelling Village, Holt, Norfolk 2002 ) first did a part-time engineering course at Southall Technical College (1946-9), followed by four years at Regent Street Polytechnic, partly funded by his earnings as a professional flyweight boxer. He studied drawing in Fernand Léger’s studio in Paris in 1951 and moved to St Ives, Cornwall in 1955 where he divided his time between flower-growing and the painting of landscape-based abstracts. A French government award further enabled him to study in Paris, this time with S W Hayter in 1958–9. Benjamin had a solo show at Newlyn Art Gallery, Penzance in 1958 and he also taught in Canada and America until 1973. By the year of his death over 60 collections in the UK and abroad, including Tate Gallery, Arts Council and Museum of Modern Art, New York hold his work.
