Andreas 'André' Theodorus van der Vossen (1893 - 1963)

Biography

Andreas Theodorus van der Vossen (b. Haarlem, Netherlands 1893 - d. Bloemendaal, Netherlands 1963) studied at the Kunstnijverheidschool in Haarlem. Until 1933, he was employed as a graphic artist at the Johan Enschedé en Zonen firm in Haarlem and also worked for the PTT as a stamp designer. From 1929 he focused on painting and co-founded the artists' associations, 'Vrij Beelden' and 'Creatie'. He exhibited at the 'Salon des Réalites' in Paris. He was influenced by the exhibitions of Kandinsky and Klee which he saw in Amsterdam in 1947 and became an abstract artist although he later destoyed his work from that period and returned to a figurative style from 1958.
