Alan Johnston (1945)

Biography

Alan Johnston (b. Edinburgh, Scotland UK 1945) attended the Edinburgh College of Art (1967–70) - where a lot of his art remains - and the Royal College of Art, London (1970-2), who also have one work. Johnston lived in Germany for a time, having his first solo show at Konrad Fischer Gallery, Düsseldorf (1973). He went on to show regularly, at the Graeme Murray Gallery in Edinburgh, at Oxford’s Museum of Modern Art and the Pier Arts Centre, Stromness, Orkney, held a touring exhibition. From the Mountain to the Plain at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art shows an inflence of Zen Buddhism. In 1998, Norwich School of Art and Design’s Norwich Gallery invited Johnston to make one of his wall drawings on a specially constructed wall, giving visitors an opportunity to view and discuss its progress over seven days.
